The Obama Voters

In 2004, George Bush beat John Kerry by 51-47 percent in the popular vote. Four years later, President Obama beat John McCain 50-49 among the same voters.

A significant swing, but not huge.

What gave Obama a landslide victory was the surge of new voters. Among people voting in 2008 for the first time – or for the first time in a long time – Obama won by 71-27 percent.

Many of those, of course, were young voters and minority voters.

If those voters don’t vote again this year, Democrats will lose as big as they won in 2008.

That’s why Organizing For America – the offshoot of Obama For America – is trying to energize new and “sporadic” voters before November 2. The group is working in North Carolina and other key states, both to protect Democratic majorities and to prepare for 2012.

The big question is whether an election without Obama on the ballot is enough to energize the Obama voters.
