The Pirates and a Chicago Billionaire

These two political consultants from Hollywood go to Chicago and tell a billionaire they have a sure fire way to whip Obama by tying him to Reverend Jeremiah Wright and all they need is $10 million – then, next, before the billionaire writes a check, the consultant’s fifty-four page plan lands in the New York Times and sets off a firestorm of howls that the consultants are up to racist politics.

But let’s face it: This wasn’t dirty politics it was part crazy politics and part hustle and the Reverend Wright was the sizzle – for instance, the tale the consultants spun to the billionaire went like this: Jeremiah Wright’s the devil in Obama’s closet so let’s pull him out into the light of day by making (as the consultants put it) ‘an unusually unique five minute film’ that exposes the ‘metro-sexual Abe Lincoln Obama’ by putting ‘Obama’s computer-generated face on the filmed body of a similarly sized actor’ then during the Democratic Convention at ‘the magic moment’ we release the film which ‘explodes on the world’ and the ‘demise of Obama begins.’

The consultants signed their proposal to the billionaire, Your Gang of Pirates (and let’s be clear: That’s what they called themselves – you can read it yourself on the New York Times website).

The lead ‘Pirate’ advocating the plan was prominent Hollywood political consultant Fred Davis and not far below his name on the list of ‘Associate Pirates’ was Brian Nick. During Elizabeth Dole’s 2008 campaign Davis and Nick came up with a plan to sink Kay Hagan by calling her an atheist. The plan backfired and sank Dole instead. Their plan to sink Obama would have been just one more example of crazy politics and a side show except for one worrisome fact: Mr. Davis and Mr. Nick are now media strategists for Pat McCrory.
