Rachel Hunt and MAGA Meltdown

Two things this past weekend made me feel good about this election.

First, I crashed a women’s fundraiser for Rachel Hunt, the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor.

Second, I posted on X/Twitter this photo of Hunt and me, showing off the Jim Hunt Dark Brandon shirt my wife got me for my birthday.

A mega MAGA meltdown ensued.

I don’t know if it was Rachel Hunt, Jim Hunt, the T-shirt, little old me or a combination thereof, but MAGA world went nuts online.

They hurled hate, vented venom and called us, among other things, “libs,” “commies,” “baby-killers,” “boneheads,” “geriatrics” (true in my case) and “old hippy” (sic and also true).

Maybe the idea of a strong, qualified, progressive woman running for office scares them.

They’d be scared if they’d been at the fundraiser.

The women at Hunt’s event ranged from 18 to 95. They were veterans of decades of political wars and young women active for the first time. They’re accomplished women who’ve been successful in business and public service, and who’ve raised families along the way.

They see themselves represented in the Democratic Party of Rachel Hunt, Anderson Clayton, Allison Riggs, Jessica Holmes, Deb Ross, Natalie Murdock and many, many more.

They see nothing but enemies in the misogynistic MAGA Republican Party of Trump and Mark Robinson.

The most prominent Republican women in the state are Michele Morrow, who hates teachers and public schools, and Tricia Cotham, who flip-flopped on abortion rights to win the favor of the GOP Good Old Boys Club.

Women across the board – Democrats, Independents and Republicans – are energized, organized and coming after MAGA Republicans this year.

They’re mad about the attacks on women and women’s healthcare rights, attacks on democracy and voting rights, and attacks on public schools and the people, mostly women, who teach and work there.

Rachel Hunt, who may be an even better politician than her father, struck a chord when she said she wants North Carolina to be a place where her newly married daughter will want to return to and live.

Oh, and one more thing happened over the weekend.

Trump planned a big outdoor rally in Wilmington. But the skies darkened, the winds howled and the heavens opened up.

He had to cancel and phone it in.

Truly a sign from Above.
