Pity the Jurors

A TAPster wrote to express his rage over news that John Edwards took in a ball game while the jury deliberated this week:

“Law-abiding citizens are summoned away from their jobs and families to be sequestered for weeks on end to decide if John Edwards has committed campaign fraud, in addition to the other many sins that he has clearly committed. While the law-abiding jurors are sequestered in what is likely to be a window-less jury room with a pitcher of water to drink , John Edwards is enjoying a beautiful spring day outside at a college baseball game with his daughter, perhaps with a hot dog, some popcorn and a cold drink.”

The TAPster had some choice words for how Edwards spent his time: “egotistical,” “tone-deaf,” “brain-dead” and “clueless.”

I feel your pain. But there’s another way to look at the jurors’ ill fortune.

Then-U.S. Attorney George Holding saw fit to pursue this case, as did the Public Integrity Section of the U.S. Justice Department. Holding is preparing to take a seat in Congress. I have no idea what the Justice attorneys are doing. Maybe enjoying a hot dog and cold drink this weekend?

Whatever the outcome of the case – acquittal, hung jury, conviction followed by endless appeals – the law-abiding jurors and the law-abiding taxpayers who paid for it will ask: Was it worth all that?
