“A change is coming, and it’s blue.” That’s the conclusion of an op-ed that looked at why more young Americans are voting Democratic. And it was my conclusion after several hours at the College Democrats/Young Democrats convention in Greenville Saturday.
I found an impressive group of smart, dedicated and determined Democrats who are getting involved and leading now. I left with a new optimism about the future.
The op-ed is by Charles Blow in The New York Times, who wrote about two Gallup reports: “U.S. Seniors Have Realigned With the Republican Party” and “Young Americans’ Affinity for Democratic Party Has Grown.”
Blow wrote, “Part of the reason for the Democratic swing among young people is the incredible diversity of the group. Gallup estimates that 45 percent of Americans 18-29 are nonwhite. But that doesn’t account for all of the change”
Gallup noted, “Young adults are not more Democratic solely because they are more racially diverse. In recent years, young white adults, who previously aligned more with the Republican Party, have shifted Democratic. From 1995 to 2005, young whites consistently identified as or leaned Republican rather than Democratic, by an average of 8 points. Since 2006, whites aged 18 to 29 have shown at least a slight Democratic preference in all but one year, with an average advantage of 3 points.”
In other words, time is not on the Republicans’ side. As Blow wrote, “The wave of demographic change and the liberal leaning of the young can’t be held back indefinitely through obstruction and aggression.” In fact, GOP voter suppression – along with policies like gay-bashing, immigrant-bashing, minority-bashing, climate change-bashing, teacher-bashing, etc. – only accelerates and hardens young Americans’ attitudes.
Then mix in the rising cadre of young leaders I met this weekend. So I tell my aging but young-at-heart Democratic peers: Don’t despair. Get busy making way for and mentoring this new generation. They’re going to save our state.

WOW…WOW…double WOW! LOVE your use of the word “bashing”. My goodness, Gary. I’d laugh if your use of it wasn’t so absurd. Teacher bashing? Really? I mean, like republicans are out there trashing and “bashing” teachers? Saying bad, horrible and demeaning and terrible things about our nation’s teachers? Where in the heck are you getting that???? Gay bashing? Again…really? C’mon, man. Republicans aren’t anti-gay. Most republicans are anti-gay marriage and don’t have a problem with gays. I mean, like it or not, a great many republicans are Christians and believe in things in the Bible and yep…again, like it or not and regardless what the bologna the radical liberal/progressives put out…the Bible speaks against that. Democrats talk all kinds of crap against republicans not being “inclusive” and “accepting”, but when republicans don’t believe as they do, just how “accepting and “inclusive” are they? Then there’s immigrant bashing. Um…kinda left out “illegal” in that, didn’t ya? And, republicans aren’t “bashing” these people being in our country illegally…you know, against our laws…republicans just want our laws enforced. That’s too much to ask? Really? They’re ILLEGAL, Gary…not people that come here LEGALLY trying to get their rights to live here and ultimately get citizenship the way our laws say they are supposed to. Oh, yeah, and then you had to go to the “climate change” card. Trust me, my friend…a whole bunch of democrats as well as republicans don’t buy the so-called “science” that is presented about this. There are so many scientists that present an alternate view of this, no one really knows the real deal on it. I mean, how did all the climate change we’ve had in known history of Mother Earth happen even when humans weren’t present or even before we had all these terrible, horrible gasses we’re supposedly making now?

Speaking to the young people now being more democratic than republican, it isn’t a surprise. I mean, look at the number of today’s young people on every kind of entitlement there is to offer in our country now. The democrats have been masterful in getting these people everything and anything they need via government. It’s no longer a goal to be “on your own” as a young person. The goal is to get to where you want to be through government support. We’ve given our young a “no pain” path to adulthood. And, as a result, just so many believe that unless they continue to vote for the democrats that support more and more government involvement and assistance in their lives, they’ll actually have to be achievers and have to start low and work hard to become successful. It’s just too much to ask in this day and time according to many democrats. I don’t blame these kids for being democrats. They’ll get everything they want if they can keep the mean, unfair, “personal responsibility” folks out of office.

The democrats have sought after and have gained the support of just about every demographic group through coddling to them. Next up? Muslims. No matter that they are anti-gay and anti-women. They’re the next big voting block and by God, they’re going to be sought after and supported by the liberal/progressives because, hey, that’s where the democratic party can gain more votes to get into power. Guess the democrats think they can deal with their bigotry and hate at a later date.

My God!!! 30 years ago if anyone would have told me our country would have looked like it does now, I’d have bet my house against it. I’d have ended up homeless, I guess.

The youth vote has always been somewhat to the left of mainstream. Sir Winston Churchill probably put it best when he said, ”If you are not a socialist at 20, you have no heart; if you are not a conservative at 40, you have no brain.” The polling I have seen, though seems to show a disallusionment of the youth with the left since the Obama elections.

France just had a blue wave – a vote wave of the right. The American media reverses the universal colors of the political spectrum – red for the left and blue for the right.

I liked the sentence, Gallup noted “Young adults are not more Democratic solely because they afre more racially diverse.” Then I had to read the article 3 more times and could never find out why other than diversity. You never point it out. What else is there that accounts for the change. Once the youth find out that socialist policies of the Democratic Party put them in debt for life it won’t take long. Keep up the lies because that’s all Democrats can do. Obama has probably done more for the Republican Party than Ronald Reagan could have ever done.
