The 61 Percent

A TAPster had this interesting take on Governor Perdue’s “Mississippi” comment about the gay-marriage vote:
“What some North Carolinians may find offensive about the governor’s remarks is that 61% of the voters have spoken, and in a democracy, that is how we establish public policy, so why should our governor publicly chastise the 61% majority of our voters who clearly expressed the public policy of our state?
“The 61% of the voters who passed the referendum is a significantly higher percent of the voters than the percentage of voters who elected the same governor who was criticizing the 61% who passed the referendum.
“If the 61% of the voters who spoke were “backward”, what can be said about the barely over 50% of the voters who selected the same governor to be governor?
“Our parents taught us about not being a sore loser…..and at least some of us learned what our parents taught us.
“Nevertheless, many of the 61% of voters who were chastised by the governor still like and support her and recognize the many good things that she has done for our state, even though she believes that 61% of us are ‘backward’.
“So, while all of the news media coverage has focused on the insult that the governor lobbed at Mississippi, I have not seen one news article focused on the insult that the governor lobbed at 61% of the North Carolina citizens who passed the referendum. Does this mean that the news media is more concerned about the folks in Mississippi than they are concerned about 61% of North Carolinians who purchase their newspapers and watch their TV stations?”
