Surging

Unless he trips coming around third base, Barack Obama has hit a grand slam with his grand tour.

The pictures are the story. Obama conferring with foreign leaders. Getting off a presidential-looking jet. Carrying a flak jacket. Riding in military helicopters. Listening to military commanders. Greeting troops. Sinking three-pointers.

Obama looked like a President. Meanwhile, John McCain looked like a remake of Grumpy Old Men.

McCain got off a golf cart with Poppy Bush and starting griping. He griped about Obama, he griped that the surge is working and – most telling of all – he griped about the media (or, as he used to call it, “my base”).

If Reagan was The Gipper, McCain is The Griper.

McCain gripes that he was right about the surge. Fine, then. If the surge worked, give him another medal and the heartfelt appreciation of a grateful nation and let’s get on with the business of getting out of Iraq.

The troops want out, the American people want out, the Iraqis want us out and even George Bush is talking about a “time horizon” for getting out.

It’s time Bush got out and we got a real President.
