Sarah Palin

Last night, I got Mau Mau-ed on a radio interview by a Democrat who said, Don’t be naïve. You can’t really believe McCain knew Sarah Palin’s daughter was pregnant before he picked her?

In fact, I’m inclined to take McCain at his word. But, for one moment, looking at it through that Democrat’s eyes, it did seem incredible. For instance, if McCain did know, why didn’t he ask Governor Palin to announce her daughter’s pregnancy in Alaska before he announced her selection in Ohio – that would have avoided the press springing it on everyone last weekend as a surprise.

Beyond that, when it did come out, Sarah Palin – and no one else – needed to address it head-on. With candor. Governor Palin needed to stand up front and center and look the cameras in the eyes, and my guess is she could have done that. But, instead, McCain’s campaign whisked her away and has kept her sequestered ever since.

Next the inevitable questions started popping up about Governor Palin’s experience – and, again, McCain’s campaign got caught flat-footed, fumbled, and looked just plain silly arguing that commanding the Alaska National Guard qualified Governor Palin to be President.

Who in their right mind would argue that?

That led to a CNN reporter asking a McCain spokesperson the obvious question, Okay, can you give me one example of how commanding the National Guard is foreign policy experience? He stared back at the camera like a deer caught in headlights.

This constitutes a whole bunch of fumbles – in five days – by folks who were supposed to know better. Governor Palin has a lot going for her and right now she ought to give some thought to telling the political gurus she’d just as soon decide how to handle the next crisis herself.
