Polls are a lot like seesaws: They tilt up then gravity takes hold and the poor fellow who was rising finds himself dropping like a stone.
Right now gravityâs pulling the Democrats down and the liberals over at Public Policy Polling are so concerned by this seismic shift theyâve turned their automatic polling machines up to high gear trying to find the silver lining in this dark cloud.
President Obama, they report, is down; the Independents â the swing voters who elected him last fall â are now looking in the Presidentâs direction and shaking their heads. But thatâs nothing compared to whatâs happened to Governor Beverly Perdue.
Governor Perdue may have sailed right off into space, beyond the point where the pull of gravity can save her;¾thereâs simply never been a Governor in North Carolina with a 25% to 55 % disapproval rating and it may be the equivalent of a political Yorktown or Waterloo â there is just no coming back.
Republican Senator Richard Burrâs 36% to 29% job approval isnât exactly a landslide of popularity but at least his side or the seesaw is going up; the Democrats have been saying for months Senator Burrâs one of the weakest incumbents in the country but, if thatâs so, where does that leave Governor Perdue?
For now, weak or not Burr is about as popular a politician as there is in North Carolina â at least until Washington Democratic king-pin Charlie Schumer grabs a hold of him (like he did Elizabeth Dole) with ten million dollars in negative ads.
