I’m not surprised Public Policy Polling found that only 54 percent on North Carolinians believe Obama was born in the United States, 26 percent said they do not believe he was and 20 percent aren’t sure.

The poll reflects a fundamental divide about Obama here and across America. It was there throughout the campaign, and it lies at the heart of the health-care debate.

A lot of people harbor deep, dark suspicions about a black man whose father was from Kenya and has a Muslim-sounding name.

That accounts for a lot of the anger and hysteria you see on Fox News and in the town halls.

Plus, those people are angry and frustrated just by the very fact that Obama won. They were dispirited during the campaign because of Bush’s unpopularity and McCain’s dispiriting campaign.

Now they have something to get hot and bothered about. They’ve bottled it up for months, and it’s all spewing out.

But back to the birthing issue. Only about half of North Carolinians voted for Obama anyway, so it’s not surprising the other half aren’t sure about him.

And, while you should never underestimate the intelligence of voters, you should never overestimate the information they have.

They’ve heard so much about Obama’s father being from Kenya they might well conclude he was born there and brought here as a child.

And do they know the Constitution requires Presidents to be born here? Which is why Arnold Schwarzenegger can never be President. And why there were questions about McCain, since he was born in the Panama Canal Zone while his father was posted there in the Navy.

And why haven’t we actually seen a copy of Lou Dobbs’ birth certificate?
