I’d pick Hillary.

I know all the reasons why Obama shouldn’t and probably won’t. Here is why he should:

1. It’s the only choice that genuinely shakes up the race. And Obama needs to shake it up.
   
2. It will electrify the convention.
   
3. It will stump McCain and the Republicans.
   
4. It will show that Obama is strong enough to pick his toughest rival – and confident enough to handle both her and Bill.
   
5. It will give Obama an immediate boost in the polls.
   
6. It will give him a running mate who can go after McCain with a blowtorch.

His more likely choices:

• Evan Bayh. Yes, he’s dull. But he’s safe and solid.
  
• Joe Biden. While Biden’s mouth makes him like one of those high-scoring, high-turnover basketball players who keeps both teams in the game simultaneously, he’s solid on foreign policy. If Biden gets it, he should thank Vladimir Putin for invading Georgia.
