Cross Your Fingers

Can Democrats get so lucky? Will the Republicans really nominate Rick Santorum?

I had high hopes for Newt Gingrich. But, once again, he has proven to be the Hindenburg of American politics: a huge vessel of hot air doomed to go down in flames.

Clearly, Mitt Romney would be the toughest Republican in November. But that’s because he’s a moderate. Which is why Republicans are desperately searching for somebody else.

So desperately they may turn to Santorum, who lost his Senate seat in Pennsylvania – a key swing state if there is one – by 18 points.

For now, he just needs to tone down the rhetoric about closing public schools, banning contraception, abandoning all environmental controls and questioning everybody else’s religious faith. Please, Rick, save that for the fall.
