Why Dole Is Winning

Word around Raleigh is that Kay Hagan wants to run – a la Bev Perdue – a “positive” campaign.

If she does, Democrats can forget beating Liddy Dole.

You don’t beat an incumbent by being positive. You have to offer voters a better alternative. If it makes you feel better, call it a “contrast” campaign instead of “negative.”

Dole is already on TV, with ads that address all her weaknesses:

  • They make it look like she actually has accomplished something in the Senate.
  • One ad plays on illegal immigrants –maybe the only issue going Republicans’ way this year.
  • The ads pretend she’s been around the state instead of holed up at the Watergate with Bob.
  • They even try to hide her age. (She’ll be 72 on July 29. About the same age as John McCain.)

Never speaking on camera, Dole gives new meaning to the term “plastic politician.”

Hagan should follow the old advice of praising your opponent before blasting her. She should commend Senator Dole for her l-o-o-o-o-o-ng career of public service. Starting with LBJ back when she was a Democrat.

Then show that it’s time for new blood and a fresh approach to represent the new North Carolina in the Senate.

Hagan can’t win if she lets Dole have the field to herself – and it she doesn’t aggressively take on the incumbent.
