We’re in Good Hands

Near the end of a Zoom meeting this week with Anderson Clayton and other new leaders of the state Democratic Party (and about 100 other people), I messaged the group: “AC, y’all are the best thing to happen to the party in a long time.”

Clayton, the new party chair, and vice chairs Jonah Garson and Dr. Kimberly Hardy are beating the drum across the state with an aggressive, optimistic message about planning, organizing and winning in 2024.

Their whirlwind travel and outreach are sending a jolt of energy through Democrats across the state – and nation.

Another senior Democrat – we call ourselves the “Geezer Caucus” – was similarly impressed in a small-group meeting with Clayton last week.

We two cynical old birds came away energized, enthused and ready to help. We were young once, so we like the new chairs’ goal of getting more young people involved in leadership roles.

They shared plans for fundraising, organizing in every corner of the state and recruiting candidates to contest all 170 legislative races. They’re dedicated to carrying North Carolina for President Biden, Josh Stein and down the ballot.

They’ve got their plans and priorities right.

Predictably, someone asked about Tricia Cotham’s party switch. The answer: “She has fired up Democrats. She has raised us more money as a Republican than she ever did as a Democrat.”

We Democrats have a way of getting in our own way. But Clayton & Co. give us hope.
