The Trials Ahead

A reader emailed: “Doing nothing heroic, I served in naval intelligence. My service required a top-secret clearance. Each time I saw a top-secret document, I recall saying to myself: ‘No wonder this is top secret.’  Similar reaction when I saw documents classified ‘secret,’ also reflecting compelling reasons to protect their confidentiality.

“Absorbing only what I have seen in media accounts, how Trump mishandled boxes and boxes of classified documents … is chilling, and infuriating.”

Trump won in 2016 after FBI Director James Comey reopened an investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private e-mail server – 11 days before the election.

Trump said then, “In my administration I’m going to enforce all laws concerning the protection of classified information. No one will be above the law.”

His crowds chanted, “Lock her up.”

Now his crowds cheer him even though the federal indictment shows – in photographs and his own words – that he not only kept classified documents, but also stored them sloppily and haphazardly all over Mar-a-Lago, where thousands of people could see them.

He showed off by showing people secret documents.

In Greensboro Saturday, Republicans cheered when he said, “This is the final battle. With you at my side, we will demolish the Deep State …”

Across the country, his loyalists vowed retribution and civil war. They more than hinted at violence. Not just isolated nuts, but members of Congress.

Before January 6, we underestimated Trump/MAGA’s potential and propensity for violence. This time, law enforcement must be prepared. Law-abiding Americans must speak up, organize – and vote.

Trump’s trials are coming. Trying days are coming for America.
