The Long Knives Out for Thompson

Fred Thompson is surging in the polls so the political long knives are out on, of all things, Watergate. According to the spin Thompson – who was Republican counsel to the Senate Watergate Committee – was too pro Nixon in 1974 (AP, 7-8-07). Pro Nixon? Thompson was the man who asked the question that revealed the existence of the White House tapes that sunk Nixon.

The second bit of spin is that Thompson – during the Watergate hearings – wasn’t “very smart.” Who said that? Well, Nixon and his White House staff.

Now, being called dumb by Nixon’s henchmen – who did such brilliant things as burglarizing the Democratic Party’s headquarters – should be a badge of honor for Thompson. The next time he’s asked that question he ought to just grin and say, Well, being called dumb by the guy who forgot to turn off the tape recorder in the Oval Office speaks for itself.
