The Great Grab

President Obama spent a lot of time last election railing against lobbyists. He said when he was elected he was going to tie them in knots. Curtail their mischief. Send them into political exile. But three months later, more than ever, government in Washington is about ‘the great grab.’ Lobbyists for special interests are lined up to dip into the national treasury to grab the loot like never before. Bankers, brokers, car makers, state governments (including ours), local governments and a legion of Democratic special interests (primed for their reward after winning the election) have their hands out. For them the economic crash (and stimulus bill) is an opportunity, not a crisis.

The ‘Green Lobby,’ the well-meaning folks out to end global warming, must feel like they’ve been handed a gift from the gods. They’re looking at a windfall: $600 million for ‘green’-friendly cars, $10 million for bike paths, $200 million for plug-in car stations, $400 million for climate change research, $650 million for alternative energy technologies and $1.5 billion for ‘green’ schools.

The poor economically distressed actors and moguls in Hollywood are reaching for $246 million in tax breaks. ACORN, Obama’s voter registration allies, top them – they’re eligible for a whopping $4 billion. The telecommunications industry wants $25 billion. And abortion groups and unions have their eyes on billions too.

The mayors want $73 billion. The governors want $12 billion. The passenger rail lobbyists want $1.5 billion and their cousins the public transportation lobbyists are after $12 billion.

I guess we’re all hoping Obama borrowing near about a trillion dollars (or whatever it is) will light a fire under the economy but, still, it’s hard not to wonder what happened to blasting the lobbyists.
