The Governor and the Lottery
Governor Mike Easley’s the leader of the Democratic Party, which has a proud heritage of empathy for the poor, downtrodden and for working people.
That’s why the Governor’s new lottery proposal sounds unusual. Governor Easley wants to spend more on prizes to entice people – primarily the poor and downtrodden – into buying more lottery tickets. He says – in the legislature will pass his plan – people will buy so many more tickets the result will be $500 million in extra income for the state.
Leaving aside the Governor’s flawed math – that his plan will work – it’s hard to get around the blunt truth. The head of the Democratic Party wants to get the legislature to agree to sucker more money out of working people with promises they’ll hit the jackpot, so the governor can spend another $500 million.
