Storm Clouds Over Democrats

President Obama swept into the White House not riding a pro-Obama wave but riding an anti-Bush tide. Now, Bush is gone and after nine months of marching straight left Obama’s setting off tides of his own and his popularity is vanishing faster than any newly elected President since the dawn of the Age of Polling.

How bad are those Obama-laden storm clouds for Democrats? President Obama’s not on the ballot next election but Harry Reid is and the Senate Democratic Leader trails his Republican opponent by a dozen points – before a shot has been fired in his campaign. There’ve been no ads, no commercials, no fireworks, no explanation for Reid’s collapse other than just as the last election was a referendum on President Bush this one’s a referendum on President Obama – and Democrats are in trouble.

Back in 1992 after he was elected his first two years in office President Clinton charged left on everything from Gays in the Military to Health Care. The result was an unimaginable disaster for Democrats: In the next election they lost control of the House of Representatives for the first time in half a century – after the smoke cleared Clinton surveyed the debris, decided he’d had enough of liberalism and about-faced. But President Obama is made of sterner stuff. It’s hard to imagine him standing up and announcing – as Clinton did – that he’s just discovered ‘the era of big government is over.’

Obama’s going to stand his ground and fight.
