Stoned and Stonewalled
Friday wasn’t Trump’s best day. Before dawn, Roger Stone surrendered to the FBI. Mid-afternoon, Trump surrendered to Nancy Pelosi.
Stoned and stonewalled in less than 12 hours.
Trump looked corrupt, clueless and – worst of all for him – weak.
Corrupt because, even if there wasn’t a criminal conspiracy with Russia, there was a coverup. Stone is accused of lying, obstructing justice and threatening a witness, Godfather-like. As my wife said, you’ve sunk pretty low when Richard Nixon’s people disavow you.
Trump and his billionaire pals looked colossally clueless and callous when they suggested that the 800,000 federal employees not getting paid should just take out loans and get their banks and grocery stores to let their bills slide. Or maybe jet off to Palm Beach during their unexpected vacation?
Trump did accomplish one thing no recent President could: He made federal employees look heroic and sympathetic. Who knew we love TSA and the IRS so much?
And Trump looked weak – dare we say impotent? – when he caved to Speaker Pelosi. Stormy’s spanking only cost him $130,000. This one cost him $5.6 billion – and a big drop in his approval ratings.
Trump’s approval/disapproval has dropped to 37-58. But Democrats shouldn’t get cocky. Trump looks bad when he’s compared to what people think a President should be. He may look better when he’s compared to who the President could be. Trump’s at his best when he can insult, belittle and dominate an opponent one-on-one.
Unless it’s Nancy Pelosi.
