Road Rage

Governor Perdue has another State Highway Patrol mess on her hands.  This time, it looks like a trooper picked the wrong people to treat the wrong way.

If you haven’t read Hoyt Tessener’s letter relating what he says happened to his wife Gina, do so. It is extremely disturbing.

Fair or not, since Tessener is an attorney, since he and his wife are an articulate and (one assumes) relatively affluent couple from Raleigh and since they are – yes – white, their complaint is getting a lot of attention.

I’ve heard from several people outraged by the news accounts. One, a prominent Republican, said: “I can imagine how I would have felt if that had been my wife.” Another friend forwarded me a much-forwarded email from Tessener with his letter attached.  His email ends: “Do not trust the State Highway Patrol.”

Governor Perdue has had enough trouble from the Patrol. She did the right thing yesterday by ordering the two troopers taken off the road. But why did it take the Governor to do that? What happens next? Can the Patrol fairly investigate its own?

And, with a holiday weekend coming up, how many women – or men, for that matter – are going to be on edge when they are stopped by a state trooper?

For the Governor, straightening out this mess will make fighting with the legislature look easy.
