Reverend Barber and Paris Hilton

The Reverend William Barber is a fellow who can spot a hot-button issue (or, at least, what’s a hot-button issue if you’re head of the NAACP, which Barber is) – so, instead of shrugging off four students making fools of themselves by writing (admittedly outrageous) graffiti about Barack Obama in N.C. State’s “Free Expression Tunnel” – Barber’s bound and determined to pillory them.

In that vein, the other day Reverend Barber trooped over to Chapel Hill and gave a UNC commission a lecture on the Ku Klux Klan’s history in North Carolina and the South – and promptly called the N.C. State graffiti “KKK-associated.”

Imagine that – the Klan on the loose at North Carolina State University!

Hammering home his point Barber said, “These words are not just words… it’s a specific language.” Then he drove the nail into the coffin, saying, “This is the kind of language that comes out of… hate groups…. the language has a history.”

In other words, the students’ ‘association’ with the Klan is the words they use. Reverend Barber had better look out – if he ever uses the words “That’s hot,” someone may accuse him of being associated with Paris Hilton.

All Rev. Barber has really proved is demagoguery transcends race, creed, color and, I guess, sexual orientation.
