Phony Politics

You have to say this for the Internet: It’s making life more dangerous for politicians.

The whole foundation for Rudy Giuliani’s campaign for President is his record on 9-11. In that vein he recently boasted New York’s Firefighters “have no greater friend” than Giuliani (Cox News Service, 7-15-07).

It turns out the Firefighters don’t agree. And made their voices heard by putting a video – of interviews with New York Firefighters – on the Internet entitled, “Rudy Giuliani: Urban Legend,” criticizing Giuliani’s performance on 9-11. In their opinion, Giuliani is no great terrorist fighter and no friend of firefighters. This goes right to the heart of Giuliani’s strength: Discredit his record on 9-11 and the heart goes out of his campaign. And who better to do that than New York City Firemen?

Mitt Romney ran into a little choppy water of his own. On YouTube. The Massachusetts Democratic Party has posted a video of Romney repeatedly downplaying “his GOP affiliation” in Massachusetts. “I’ve been clear, I think,” Romney says on the tape, “to people all across the commonwealth, that my ‘R’ didn’t stand so much for ‘Republican’ as it does for ‘reform.’”

Politicians have been saying one thing one day and another the next and getting away with it for years. But, today, there’s a video posted on the Internet and it’ll be there until the electronic equivalent of eternal life expires.
