Pelosi for Speaker

Women voters, women volunteers, women donors and women candidates made this the best year for Democrats since Watergate. Now some Democrats want to dump the highest-ranking female elected official in the nation?

Nancy Pelosi has taken Hillary Clinton’s place as the most-demonized politician in America. That’s to be expected from Republicans. They hate her because she’s good at what she does. She’s tough, she’s smart and she’s a winner. Of course, she’s also guilty of being a woman.

But why should Democrats buy into her demonization?

She’s the only Democratic officeholder who has delivered a big legislative achievement: the Affordable Care Act. Even her famously clumsy quote – “We have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it, away from the fog of controversy” – turned out to be prescient. Now that people know what’s in it, like protection for preexisting conditions, they like it.

Pelosi was field general, chief fundraiser and message enforcer for Democratic campaigns that won 38 House seats. She refused to let candidates bash away at Trump; she insisted they focus on health care, jobs and the concerns of all Americans.

Despite her image as a San Francisco leftie, she wants House Democrats to focus on health care, jobs, infrastructure, climate change and integrity in government, not impeachment and abolishing ICE.

What’s not to like? Give her the gavel.
