Pat’s Mid-Year Review

A veteran executive of a big North Carolina corporation offers this:

“If Governor McCrory had remained in corporate America, he would’ve been subjected to a mid-year review by his boss to ensure he’s on target to meet his goals and objectives.

“Let’s see how he’s doing as governor:

“Strategic planning and execution. Needs improvement. There’s little evidence of any strategic plan from this administration, or any clear understanding of what it stands for or what it’s trying to do. McCrory should vigorously and regularly poll a broad section of the state’s citizens and find out what’s important, and base his decisions and priorities on what he learns from the polls. When the legislature veers from what’s important, he should veto their nonsense and loudly tell the world he’s on the side of the people. He needs to focus on what’s important and not get dragged into the tea party jungle.

“Communications skills. Needs significant improvement. The Governor is glib and likeable, but his off-the-cuff remarks and cookie deliveries make him look clueless. He needs to be thoughtful about what he’s saying and more dignified in his delivery. Only then will he regain some of his lost credibility. When something screws up, he needs to say he’s sorry and fire somebody. And, as important, every person in McCrory’s administration should be able to recite a 2-3 sentence statement of what their boss wants to accomplish. It would be helpful if it was the same 2-3 sentences for everyone.

“Personnel matters. Needs significant improvement. Whether it was the train wreck with his public safety secretary or the ongoing nightmare with the overpaid kids at DHHS, this area shows a lack of due diligence, oversight and management control. Nothing will kill a career quicker than hiring the wrong people.

“In corporate America, McCrory would have a certain amount of time to correct these deficiencies. So, let’s give him three years or, as they say in corporate speak, he’ll be leaving to seek other opportunities.”
