Parsing Words, Stepping Carefully
Donald Trump’s in the crosshairs of the district attorney in New York, the district attorney in Atlanta, and a special prosecutor in Washington. Last week moving a step closer to indicting Trump the Manhattan D.A. asked Trump to testify in front of a grand jury.
Does he have a case? Or is he fueling a ‘political witch hunt?’
Back in the summer of 2016 as Trump was battling Hillary, National Enquirer owner David Pecker told Trump, and his lawyer Michael Cohen, Playboy centerfold Karen McDougal was offering to sell him a story about her affair with Trump for $125,000.
Trump told Pecker, Buy it. Bury it. I’ll repay you.
Pecker bought, buried, the story.
Next the Access Hollywood tape hit – Trump landed in another sex scandal. And Pecker called Trump lawyer Michael Cohen again: Porn star Stormy Daniels was offering to sell him a story about her affair with Trump. Cohen told Pecker, Buy it. Bury it. Pecker said no, that Trump hadn’t paid him back the $125,000 he’d paid McDougal.
Cohen set up a shell company, paid Daniels $130,000 himself and, after the election, Trump repaid Cohen.
Here’s the legal question: Did Michael Cohen pay Stormy Daniels hush money a month before the election to help Trump get elected? If the answer’s yes, the $130,000 he paid Daniels was an illegal campaign contribution to Trump. And Trump repaying Cohen for an illegal contribution is a problem.
A lot of Presidents have landed in sex scandals. Grover Cleveland had a son out of wedlock. Warren Harding had a daughter out of wedlock. Bill Clinton had Monica Lewinsky. Did Trump have an affair with Stormy Daniels? And pay her hush money before the election?
His lawyer Michael Cohen says he did. Cohen pled guilty to making an illegal contribution and went to jail. And Trump – what does Trump say?
Parsing words, stepping carefully, Trump’s press spokesman put out what’s called a nondenial-denial: “The threat…to indict President Trump is simply insane.”
