Carter is a Republican. Gary is a Democrat.

They met in 1984, during the epic U.S. Senate battle between Jesse Helms and Jim Hunt. Carter worked for Helms and Gary, for Hunt.

Years later, they became friends. They even worked together on some nonpolitical clients.

They enjoy talking about politics. So they started this blog in 2005.

They’re still talking. And they invite you to join the conversation.

I Stand Corrected

By Gary Pearce December 3, 2009

News & Observer Executive Editor John Drescher doesn’t miss much. Within minutes of my post below about the N&O’s 25-year club, he shot me this email:   Gary, There are far more long-timers here than you give us credit for. Of the people in the 25-year club, 15 are in the newsroom: Tudor, Christensen, Stevens, Siceloff,…

Aging Out

By Gary Pearce December 3, 2009

As an ex-News & Observer employee (I left in 1975), I’m always interested in the 25-year club members.   The ad in today’s paper was revealing.   Of the 62 members, only five work in news. One more is in editorials. And two more are in interactive media.   That is, only five people in…

Landing in the Soup

By Carter Wrenn December 2, 2009

You can tell when a politician lands in the soup – because he starts writing op-eds in the News and Observer – praising himself. What put Secretary Lanier Cansler in the op-ed writing business was a story on WRAL-TV about Cansler trying to cut medical care to a 20 month old infant on Medicaid.…

Sharp DSCC Elbows

By Gary Pearce December 2, 2009

This isn’t how Cal Cunningham wanted to reenter the Senate race.   Joe (the Sledgehammer) Sinsheimer weighed in on Facebook: “While I think Cunningham is an attractive candidate, I really don’t like the idea of folks in Washington choosing our next Senator.”   Nor does Elaine Marshall’s campaign. The Hill says: “This has left Marshall‘s…

While Rome Burns

By Carter Wrenn December 1, 2009

Over at the Federal Courthouse in Raleigh a Grand Jury’s investigating former Governor Easley for corruption.   The newspaper reports just before he left office former State Treasurer Richard Moore handed a San Diego hedge fund $500 million in state pension money to invest – then a few weeks after he left office took a…

‘Bailout Burr’

By Gary Pearce December 1, 2009

I talked to two seasoned and smart Democrats recently who think that – contrary to all the talk about 2010 being a Republican year – Richard Burr will be vulnerable.   One, who watched Burr’s race in 2004, thinks he is a weak campaigner. That year, Burr did in fact campaign as far under the…

General Washington and Newt

By Carter Wrenn December 1, 2009

Not every politician can straddle a fence standing on one leg, but Newt Gingrich can do it and make it look easy.   For over a decade Newt’s enthusiasts and supporters have been saying his ‘Contract with America’ was why the Republicans swept the 1994 election – but, in fact, right here in North…

Tiger and the Rags

By Gary Pearce November 30, 2009

Readers of The National Enquirer knew from the beginning what readers and viewers of ESPN, the networks, The News & Observer, The New York Times and all other major media didn’t know until well after Tiger Woods made one of his worst drives ever.   Last week, The Enquirer reported that Tiger had been –…

Ruffin Poole and $500 Million

By Carter Wrenn November 24, 2009

I’ve never laid eyes on Joe Sinsheimer. Politically he and I walk on opposite sides of the street. But if you ever get the feeling North Carolina politics has turned into a swamp of no-bid contracts and corrupt politicians stop a moment and consider what Sinsheimer has single-handedly done with good old-fashioned hard work –…

Political Shots Fired

By Gary Pearce April 28, 2026

The political sniping began even as chaos still reigned at the White House Correspondents Dinner. My…
