Obama in the Minefield

Well, it’s like déjà vu all over again. A Democratic congressman stands up, looks the president in the eye and says, I’m not for sending any more troops to fight until I see an exit plan. Only, this time, the president he’s looking in the eye is Obama and the war’s in Afghanistan, not Iraq. Because, it seems, Obama’s on track to double the troops on the other side of the Khyber Pass from 30,000 to 60,000.

Make no mistake: For Obama, politically, this is a minefield.

When the war in Iraq went south President Bush lost the support of Democrats and Independents but, by and large, Republicans stuck with him. His base splintered but remained intact.

But the peace wing of the Democratic Party is no more anxious to pour troops into Kabul than it was into Baghdad. So what we may be hearing in this congressman’s retort to the president are the first tiny sounds of Obama’s Democratic base cracking right down the middle under him.
