McCain Disses Bush
It’s hard to tell if John McCain’s running against Barack Obama or George Bush. First, McCain went down to New Orleans and blasted Bush for his fumbling after Hurricane Katrina; now McCain’s let Bush have it for disagreeing with Al Gore about global warming. It’s beginning to seem like every time Obama says electing McCain is the same as giving George Bush a third term – McCain rears back and punches Bush in the nose to prove otherwise.
There’s nothing really wrong with McCain disagreeing with Bush. No doubt putting a wide length between himself and Bush makes a lot of political sense. But McCain’s timing – and naked political motives – are a little troubling. Throughout the primaries he and Bush were in ‘kiss and make up’ mode. Now, the ease with which McCain has tossed Bush over the side like so much unwanted baggage smells like opportunism rather than, as McCain’s boaster’s proclaim, his much ballyhooed ‘independent streak’ asserting itself.
