Lucifer

Because of two stories about crimes I’m wondering what people think about ole’ Lucifer? Does he really exist?

Both stories – about particularly brutal crimes – were reported in The News and Observer.

The first was the Wake County District Attorney’s summation in the trial of Byron Waring, asking the jury to give Waring – who is twenty years old – the death penalty for the rape and murder of Lauren Redman of Knightdale.

Ms. Redman had met Mr. Waring once, briefly (he was a friend of her former roommate) before the night last fall when he knocked on her apartment door. Once inside the apartment he seized her then let a second man, Joseph Sanderlin, into the apartment. Then he punched her, knocked her to the floor, kicked her in the face and held her as Sanderlin raped her. Being interrogated by police later, Waring described unemotionally (in a taped confession) how after the rape Sanderlin began “working on her stomach” with a “nice, medium-sized butcher knife.” Finally, Waring stabbed Ms. Redman twice himself, slashing her throat. Ms. Redman died crawling into the breezeway outside her apartment calling for help.

“In the last minutes of her life,” District Attorney Doug Faucette told the jury, “she was actually looking at her intestines.”

Waring’s attorneys argued he was a victim of childhood abuse. That his mother deserted him at birth. That he suffered a severe learning disability. All his life, they said, he’d been subjected to ridicule so he was shy and frustrated and the night he stabbed Ms. Redman he “had the mental and emotional capabilities of a 12-year-old.”

The other crime is simpler. But more mystifying because the victim is a child. Police in New Bedford, Massachusetts have charged a 34-year-old man with biting off his girlfriend’s three-year-old daughter’s lip and ear. The child, police say, had bite wounds covering her body, inflicted over a four-month period.

What’s your explanation? The Devil? Evil? Madness? Genes? The environment? Childhood abuse? Anyone interested in commenting?
