The last time Newt Gingrich got this mad, he shut down the federal government. He thought Bill Clinton disrespected him by giving him a bad seat on Air Force One.
Now he thinks Mitt Romney disrespected him by having super-PACs dump millions of dollars on his head in Iowa, making his comeback one of the most short-lived in history.
What will Newt do this time?
Well, he’ll probably run some fun ads of his own. And he’ll almost certainly turn his verbal flamethrower on Romney in this weekend’s debates. All the venom and sarcasm that Newt spewed on President Obama and the media in previous debates, which fueled his comeback, will now be aimed at Romney, which will guarantee Newt’s rapid descent back into oblivion.
When he was riding high, a Republican friend told me that “there’s only one thing that can beat Newt now: Newt.” He was right: ads reintroducing the old Newt damaged the new Newt.
Now Newt will not doubt finish the job by – well, just being Newt.
