John Edwards has told ABC News he had an affair with Rielle Hunter. It will be on Nightline tonight.

Now, as I’m sure you have, I’ve seen folks get knocked down flat on their backs and get kicked while they’re still lying there. It’s just plain mean. Also, after all this hit the airwaves I talked to one of the people who worked for Edwards; from her point of view this is not a happy day.

This morning, the intrepid Democrat “Brunette” took Gary to task for what he had to say about Edwards and the National Enquirer. She wrote in response to his blog, I am hoping you or Carter will address whether this story is as relevant to the public interest as who Paris Hilton is dating or whether Clay Aiken is gay.

Well, I’d say yes. It is relevant.

For some strange reason we seem to be plodding through an era when our politicians, by and large, seem hollow to the core. All glitter, no substance. Big hat, no cattle.

I reckon John Edwards should weigh on us not because he got himself tangled up with a blonde, but because he misled people like the woman who worked for him. And because it seems the disease infecting our politics is virulent and spreading and if we just say, What does that have to do with the public interest, it’s going to keep on spreading – at least until someone stands up and says, By God, deliver me, I’ve seen enough of this, and a few other voices add, Amen.
