John Edwards Iowa Blues

When John Edwards boasts he will win Iowa because he’s ‘got more feet on the ground’ (meaning volunteers) than Hillary and Obama it’s a sure sign his campaign is on life support.

Edwards has run head-on into three brick walls. Money. Money. And Money. Obama and Hillary each have $30 million more than he does and what it means is simple: Obama has spent $3.5 million in Iowa to put his message on television, Hillary has spent $1.6 million and Edwards has spent nothing. No wonder Edwards has dropped 14 points in the polls and now trails both Hillary and Obama.

Edwards is in a tough spot. He lacks the money to compete. He’s losing ground. And there is very little he can do but wait and pray the other candidates’ mistakes will breathe new life into his campaign. His best – and maybe last – hope of winning Iowa is a blood bath between Hillary and Obama which sends Democratic votes to him. It could happen. But it’s a slim reed. Voters could just as well turn to Bill Richardson or Dennis Kucinich or one of the other candidates. Or, more likely, Hillary may simply snowball into a huge lead.
