Jim Hunt’s Secret Plan Revealed
Now it can be told.
People have noticed that Governor Emeritus Jim Hunt seems to be everywhere this campaign: speaking at James Taylor’s concert, raising money for Kay Hagan, sending emails for Bev Perdue, campaigning across the state and – in his spare time – organizing Wilson County for Obama.
Here is why: This election is the culmination of a secret plan that Hunt hatched 30 years ago.
In the late 1970s, during his first term as Governor, Hunt saw Democrats moving to the Republican Party, mainly over civil rights. He knew his party was in for a rough time. He himself lost to Jesse Helms in 1984 as the tide turned.
So Hunt began recruiting new business to North Carolina. He deliberately targeted high-tech companies, which required higher levels of training and education. He knew that these new businesses would attract smart people to North Carolina.
He also pushed to upgrade North Carolina’s system of education, to turn out better-trained and better-educated people.
The goal was a better-educated population. Because, as everyone knows, when people get smarter, they are more likely to vote Democratic.
Now Hunt’s 30-year strategy is paying off. All is going according to plan.
