In Defense of Pundits

Enough self-flagellation, already.

The media and all of us in the “chattering class” are in full mea culpa frenzy.

We have sinned. We have over-reacted and over-reached and over-relied on polls. We have jumped to hasty conclusions. We have talked when we should have listened. We have been too quick to anoint winners and condemn losers. But now we have seen the error of our ways. We promise, promise never to sin again. Just like we do every four years.

Enough, already. Let’s get back to it.

We’ve got 24 hours to fill on cable channels. We’ve got blogs to fill. We’ve got an echo chamber to gin up over meals, coffee and drinks.

The dirty secret is we love it. We have to do it. We’re addicts. We can’t stop. It’s fun, for crying out loud. This is why we worked ourselves into jobs where we could spend hours every day in an orgy of over-reading, over-reaching and over-analyzing.

Besides, there is something called the fierce urgency of now. It’s an election year. With a presidential election that’s wide open on both sides.

This is our time. Don’t let anyone take it away from us.
