GodfatherGate

The news last night looked like a mashup remake of “The Godfather” and Watergate.

Michael Cohen flipping on Trump is like consigliere Tom Hagen turning state’s witness against Don Corleone.

Then Trump came on saying Cohen was “a weak person” whom he hired “because he did me a favor a long time ago.” Did Cohen leave a horse’s head in somebody’s bed?

Maybe Donald Jr. and Eric Trump can play Sonny and Fredo.

Then CNN had John Dean commenting on Trump, juxtaposed with clips of Dean testifying against Nixon.

If Watergate was a “third-rate burglary,” TrumpGate is a first-rate Moscow real estate deal. With a $50 million penthouse for Putin. And Trump lied about it. Repeatedly. And maybe told Cohen to lie to Congress.

Looming in the background is the implacable, inexorable Robert Mueller, who has to be the only person in Washington who doesn’t talk or leak. His indictments and charge documents do the talking.

The country is going to blow up over all this. Wisely, Nancy Pelosi says there should be no impeachment unless Republicans sign on. She says it should be bipartisan, like with Nixon, not totally partisan, like with Clinton.

The spotlight will fall on North Carolina’s Senators. Thom Tillis will be running for reelection, squeezed between Trump-haters and Trump-lovers. Richard Burr says he’s not running again. He’ll be writing his role in history, either as Sam Ervin II – or just another Trump toady.
