Give Back the Dirty Money

The North Carolina Democratic Party needs to shed the stink of video poker money.

A federal grand jury in Asheville has indicted 21 people for illegally operating video poker machines in 15 western N.C. counties. The allegations include bribery of two Buncombe County sheriff’s deputies.

Joe Sinsheimer’s complaint to the State Board of Elections this week noted that the video poker industry gave the national Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee $30,000 in 2000. Sinsheimer questions whether that amounted to an illegal corporate contribution to the state party.

The smart thing for Chairman Jerry Meek to do is give the money back. Don’t argue, don’t fight the allegation and don’t defend what was done back then.

Legal or not, it’s dirty money. Write the State Board of Elections a $30,000 check and make it clear that North Carolina Democrats don’t want video poker money. Period.
