Fred Thompson on the Rise

There’s a new poll out from Public Policy Polling, the Democratic pollsters in Raleigh.

There’s not much change in the Democratic or Republican primaries for Governor. Beverly Perdue and Bill Graham still lead as they have since last fall. (And, in the Republican primary, a whopping 60% of the voters are still undecided).

There is a change in the Democratic presidential primary. John Edwards has dropped 14 points in three months, falling into a virtual tie with Hillary and Barack Obama.

There’s an even bigger change in the Republican race. Rudy Giuliani’s healthy lead has vanished. Since Fred Thompson has (all but) announced, Giuliani’s plummeted to 15% of the vote.

John McCain’s done worse, dropping to 7%. And Mitt Romney’s done worse still, dropping to 6%.

Where did the votes go? To Thompson. Who has ‘soared’ to 34% percent and now leads Giuliani by a whopping 19 points.

Part of Thompson’s surge may be due to issues. But it may be more the result of who he is: A conservative southerner. It didn’t take much more than one good look for southern Republicans to say, He’s one of us. So, Thompson’s surging in the south which, if you’re a Republican running for President, is a pretty good place to be on the rise.
