A long time ago a boisterous politician told a mean lie in the middle of a campaign; sitting in a lawyer’s office I learned politicians have a 1st Amendment right to lie – suing him would fail. So I was surprised Dominion Voting Systems sued Fox for repeating Trump’s lie that voting machines stole votes for Biden. And more surprised when Fox paid Dominion $787 million to avoid going to court.
Fox’s audience liked Trump. Fox repeated Trump’s lie to please its audience. The audience nodded. So the problem’s not Fox – it’s the audience and, at the end of the day, that’s the greatest harm Trump’s done: He got Americans to swear a lie isn’t a lie.
Will there be a reckoning?
