Don’t impeach!

Democrats: Don’t impeach Trump. Don’t talk about it. Don’t even think about it.

Think this through. We want every Republican officeholder and candidate to spend every day of the next 27 months, all the way through Election Day 2020, defending, rationalizing, apologizing for, agonizing over and tiptoeing around Trump.

When a Democrat in Congress gets asked about impeachment, he or she should say: Talk to the Republicans. It’s up to them.

This isn’t just smart politics. It’s good government. History teaches that it’s bad for the country when one party, and only one party, tries to impeach a President (see Bill Clinton and Andrew Johnson). Impeachment is a wrenching, grinding, divisive ordeal. It should be pursued only on a bipartisan basis (see Richard Nixon).

Impeachment really should be decided by Republicans. Make them deal with it. Every new development involving Trump, every tweet, every rally rant, every new headline, every guilty plea, every crony in court: Make Senators Burr and Tillis and all their colleagues answer for it.

It will make their lives miserable.

Yes, that means Trump will stay in office. But this great nation will endure. And then, when he runs for reelection in 2020, Democrats will win so much we’ll get tired of winning.
