Democrats: Marching Off the End of the World?

It’s hard not to like Barack Obama. Or admire his success. Or perseverance. Or eloquence.

But I’m beginning to have a feeling of déjà vu.

Every two decades or so the Democratic Party erupts and gives birth to a candidate who sets Democrats all aquiver in the pits of their liberal souls.

Remember Eugene McCarthy? Or George McGovern.?

The young people get fired up, the college professors swoon, money pours in, volunteers mobilize in legions. The tide rises to sweep through Washington to correct a myriad of ills – and the Democratic establishment reacts with horror.

Then, historically, one of two things happens.

The establishment crushes or pre-empts the newcomer: Gene McCarthy.

Or the revolution succeeds and the Democrats march off the left end of the earth: George McGovern.

Despite all of Obama’s appeal I’m beginning to suspect in the end he may meet the same fate.

Hillary and Bubba (Bill) haven’t forgotten that being the most liberal candidate ever to run for President isn’t a game-plan for victory. In the general election they’ll go back to being “centrist” Democrats.

But Obama’s the real thing. A true liberal. And he’s sincere. And he’ll stick to his guns.

You’ve got to admire all he’s accomplished. But, still, it’s beginning to look a lot like by facing left and marching over the horizon Democrats are about to give Republicans a reason to count their blessings.
