Can the GOP Stand Pat?

Everybody assumes there will be a governor’s race next year between Bev Perdue and Pat McCrory.

Hold the mayo.

Some conservative Republicans (and I’m not talking about Carter; I haven’t asked him) aren’t excited about McCrory. They don’t see much difference between him and Perdue.

They’re casting around for a real conservative to run in the Republican primary. If they find one, McCrory could get hit as a flip-flopper and closet moderate on issues like taxes and annexation.

A moderate former Charlotte mayor is not exactly the Tea Party’s cup of tea.

Plus, McCrory may run into what happened to Governor Hunt when he went back into the Governor’s office in 1993: Members of his own party who were running the legislature liked being in charge – and running over the Republican governor. They didn’t like ceding their power and the limelight.
