Rob Christensen may be right that the Bubba vote – male and female – will decide North Carolina for Clinton or Obama. That’s why the two old Bubba Buddies from their days together as attorneys general – Bill Clinton and Rufus Edmisten – have been campaigning together (a thought that gives one pause).

But black voters could be another key May 6.

Suppose Clinton gets 20 percent of the African-American vote. Combined with a strong vote among older, downscale whites, she could steal a win here – an upset that would help her withstand the pressure to give up.

Obama has been winning 90 percent of the black vote in other Southern states. So it’s easy to dismiss Clinton’s chances of cutting that margin.

But high-profile endorsements by African-American leaders could give her hope. That’s why it was important that Wake County Commissioner Lindy Brown showed up at her headquarters opening.

The B&B strategy is a long shot, but so is Clinton’s candidacy now.
