Sometimes Iâm naïve. I didnât get why Rep. Harold Brubaker was resigning in the middle of his House term.
Heâs been in the legislature since Governor O. Max Gardnerâs administration â or something like that. He was Speaker in the 90s. He is one of the most powerful members of the House. His party controls the House and the Senate. They may elect the next Governor.
Why give all that up?
But my friend the Ex-Lobbyist explained it in an email: âHe quit early because the pesky six-month waiting period required by law would require him to miss the lucrative long session that starts in January.â
He added: âThis is the latest stinky mess from the boys and girls on Jones Street. The former speaker abandoned constituents who voted to send him to Raleigh for two years â not a year and a half â and surely didnât send him to Raleigh to audition for American Lobbyist. And nobody seems to care how wrong this is.â
Ex-legislators and well-connected politicos, he went on, âthink they can be lobbyists and expect clients to fling money at them because of their contacts and knowledge of the process. And clients will, even though the âlobbyistsâ have no clue about their clients and their issues. They can open doors; thatâs it. Oh, and cash checks.â
He added, âVoters are angry and cynical, but this crap wonât stop until voters throw rotten tomatoes at the rotten tomatoes who continue to stink up the political world.â
