Broke

Oil still gushes into the Gulf of Mexico, courtesy of BP – “Broken Pipe.” So many dollars, debt and deficits gush out of Washington that the country looks broke.

Even Al and Tipper broke up.

This is a scary scenario for President and Obama and the Democrats (except for the Gore split). Nothing destroys a Presidency faster than looking impotent. Ask Jimmy Carter.

The administration obviously figured that, if it couldn’t stop the leak, it could at least start a criminal investigation.

The next obvious move is to try to make the Gulf crisis work for the administration. You can bet somebody in the White House is thinking about this.

Something like a Get Off Oil plan. Call it GOO: A big tax on gasoline to promote conservation and develop alternative fuels.

That could be as big a winner as Gerald Ford’s Whip Inflation Now program. (WIN was a Loser, in case you forgot.)

Judging from the beach traffic this weekend, we aren’t upset enough about the oil spill to stop driving and start using less of the stuff.

Even Obama encouraged people last week to visit the GulfCoast – and use more gas.

A long summer spent watching video of the spewing pipe and spreading slick won’t help Democrats’ November prospects.

Hope was Obama’s message, not hopeless.
