Both Vices

Donald Trump keeps saying, When I’m President I’m going to make the greatest deals you ever saw and I’ll be the greatest jobs President God ever created and When I’m President you’re going to be so happy but America’s jaded voters have been fooled by too many politicians to believe a line like ‘I’m going to make you so happy’ – so Trump has to stop bragging. But he can’t. Trump likes bragging. After building a multi-billion dollar fortune and starring in his own TV show it’s as natural to him as breathing.

Then there’s Trump’s other problem: Bullying. It’s like a reflex – the moment he’s punched Trump punches back. He doesn’t even have to think. And in some ways his combativeness is admirable. But Trump doesn’t punch straight from the hip like John Wayne – he punches back low and hard like Liberty Valance.

Trump’s mocking a reporter with paralysis (which Hillary has put in enough ads for all the world to see) is a portrait of a bully run amuck – and no one wants Liberty Valance in the White House.

Vanity. And Wrath. Both ancient vices. And both haunting Donald Trump as he runs for President.
