Basnight’s Pier

I figured ole’ Marc Basnight just loved fishing piers, so he passed a bill to build the grandest one you ever saw – with a ballroom and restaurant – in his district. But it looks like Senator Basnight had a more practical reason: Basnight Construction Company is building the $25 million pier.

Next explaining how his construction company came to be building the pier his bill created got dicey and Basnight slipped, telling reporters he hadn’t had anything to do with his company in a decade. That backfired when a watchdog group the Civitas Institute dug out a copy of Basnight’s official Senate Financial Disclosure Form and found right there in black and white he’d reported he’d served as President of the company 8 of the last 10 years.

One thing is for sure – you have got to give our Democratic leaders credit. They know how to make government work.

Former Governor Mike Easley passed out a raft of state environmental permits to the developer and got a $130,000 discount on a beach front lot; former Senate Majority Leader Tony Rand sold $200,000 of his company’s products to state government using no bid contracts; Governor Perdue gave a $9 million tax break to one of her son’s clients; the Secretary of Health and Human Services passed out $250 million in no bid contracts to his friends and former clients; and, Senator Basnight appropriated $25 million for a fishing pier his company’s building.

All in all, it sounds like maybe somebody ought to keep an eye on the china and silverware in the Governor’s Mansion – and whatever else isn’t nailed down.
