While Judge Hudson was making common sense, Mayor Meeker was headed in the opposite direction. The Mayor told the News and Observer (1-3-07) he has “considered” running for the United States Senate against Elizabeth Dole, but decided there is more a mayor in a bustling city like Raleigh can do than a Senator. So he’s running for reelection.

A United States Senator is one of the most powerful people on earth. The Mayor of Raleigh gets to preside over the opening of the Fayetteville Street Mall. Could it be the Mayor is being less than candid? Is it possible he took – or someone shared with him – a poll about his chances of defeating Elizabeth Dole? Couldn’t he just have said, It looks like I lose a Senate race, but I probably get reelected Mayor, so I’m running for Mayor.
