The Romney campaign won a 24-hour news cycle on the “Are you better off?” question, but they may lose the election over it.
Team Obama and the Democrats should relish this fight. And not worry about having been caught off guard – although that was inexcusable. Who won or lost the news cycle matters much to the media and political elite, but not a whit to the voters who count.
Here’s why Democrats should welcome the question – and wade in: It gives them a free pass to play the blame game.
As follows: “The Republicans ask if we’re better off. Well, let’s look at exactly how well off we were four years ago.”
You might recall that September 2008 gave us that sinking sensation that the entire financial system might collapse – and plunge us into a Depression. The American auto industry – and hundreds of thousands of jobs – teetered on the edge of bankruptcy. People were fleeing the stock market – and banks.
Senator Richard Burr even called his wife and told her to go to the ATM and take out as much cash as he could. Does he feel better four years ago?
Plus, Democrats can blame Republicans for retarding the recovery: “If they didn’t fight every single thing President Obama tried to do, we’d be much better off.”
This is a fight Democrats should want – and win.
