Until Saturday Mitt Romney’s road to the White House was straightforward – the election was a debate about Barack Obama’s failure to turn the economy around.
That has now changed. The election will still be about Obama’s failure but it will also be about the Republicans’ cure for that failure: Paul Ryan’s budget.
And the Obama campaign is already bludgeoning away, saying Ryan’s budget ‘cuts taxes on millionaires, cuts education and ends Medicare.’ Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx even chimed in, adding his two cents worth, saying Romney’s economic policies are “actually designed to hurt the middle class.”
Now ask yourself: What sane candidate running for President would think, The way for me to get elected is to screw the middle class to help millionaires? Instead, what we have here are two opposite visions of how to help the middle class – and a lot of two-bit politicians (like Mayor Foxx) spouting bromides.
Mitt Romney now has a harder road to the White House but, laying politics aside, it’s a better road. These are issues that need to be debated. And choices that should be decided by a Presidential Election.
If Paul Ryan gives us that kind of debate – in the midst of a Presidential election that’s been eviscerated by the clamor of politics – he has done us a service.
